Akamai で開発された iCAP (Internet Content Adaptation Protocol) をよりオープンで柔軟にしたもの。
例えば、iCAP は HTTP に特化していて、 ほかの標準プロトコルやストリーミングをサポートしない。また、 特定のセキュリティー技術に依存したり、バージョン間での実装互換性が 低いなどの問題を持っていた。らしい。(どこまで改善されたかはよく分からない)
