物語は、魔王カッチェイによって囚とらわれの身になっている乙女たちを、若い王子が火の鳥の力を借りて助けだすという、ある意味ではたわいないもの。バレエ初演の際に初めてパリを訪れたというストラヴィンスキーは、この作品によって一躍時の人となるが、彼はその後、生涯において3つの演奏会用組曲を作成した。2管編成、6曲からなる「1919年版」はその中でも最も人気が高い。全曲は続けて演奏される。
魔法の国の妖しげな雰囲気を描いた第1曲〈序奏〉は、最弱音のコントラバスと大太鼓による開始部に、弦のハーモニクスによる軋きしんだ響きが続く。第2曲〈火の鳥とその踊り〉は、火の鳥の登場を示す、ごく短い部分。ピアノの巧みな用法は、当時としては先駆的だろう。第3曲〈王女たちの踊り〉は、魔王に捕らえられている乙女たちの踊り。木管楽器が柔らかくソロを重ねる端正な音楽。
第4曲〈カッチェイ王の魔の踊り〉は、魔王と手下による凶悪な踊り。全曲の中心をなすダイナミックな音楽で、主題の強烈なシンコペーションを初めとして随所にリズムの仕掛けがある。第5曲〈こもり歌〉は、ファゴットを中心に奏されるロシアの子守歌。火の鳥が歌うこの旋律を聴いて、魔王と手下たちは寝入ってしまう。第6曲〈終曲〉では、魔法が解けた乙女たちが踊り、王子は彼女たちの中のひとりと結婚する。コラール風の主題が環のように拡がってゆき、7拍子のエンディングに突入。この部分では、主題の旋律一音ずつに7の和音（その多くは長七、いわゆるメジャー7の和音）が付されて、華やかな響きを作りだす。
